Hey all,
I'm sort of hoping to find a running partner for my early/mid-morning (8:30-9:30?) runs somewhere in SF. I kind of want to experience the city, so I'm open to location, and changing it regularly.

I'm late 20s, female, running about 3-4 miles each day, which takes me about 40 minutes. I want to increase the speed a bit, and definitely increase the distance, but this is where I'm starting from.

Today I ran up ocean beach, and up near El Camino Del Mar, and sort of looped around on a little trail as well, then did tricep dips on the way back to the car, at each bench along the boardwalk, and little jumps up on the curb.

Yesterday I jogged the GGB, both ways (~3.4 mi) in about 35 minutes- WOW, it was gorgeous. It's what made me realize why SF is rated the #1 running city in the country - it's freaking AWESOME!

I'm just trying to get a decent work out in, 4-5 mornings a week. If you can only join me for one run a week, that would still be great!

Even if you can't do this, if you have suggestions for runs around the city, I'd appreciate it!!

I am only at about 10 to 12 miles comfortably right now but can start at a lesser distance. I want to ramp the distances by 10 to 20% every week to every other week eventually to run a 50k then a 50 miler. The marathon (5) is the longest distance I have run yet and I generally run pretty slow. I would like to explore new trails with the LSD (long slow distance) attitude. Any abiltiy or distance ability welcome. The main thing is to start together, that is get my lazy ass out of bed to the trail head. If we can't finish together for what ever reason so be it. I haven't settled on an exact ultra date, so thats open too.
I somehow injured my foot when I went running last Thursday night and it doesn't seem to be improving--now the whole right calf of my leg hurts too. Does anyone have any recommendations for doctors in San Francisco who specialize in this sort of thing? Maybe some kind of orthopaedic/sports medicine specialist? I'd appreciate any advice you folks could offer on this...
... my legs are really // jangley // and tight in odd places.

My body stretches out nicely and otherwise has no other extreme issues.. but after a winter run I am allllll over the place. After running in the cold I stumble and get what feels like 'rips' of tightness through my quads and calves and my intracostals too sometimes... but I'm fine.. it's just this weird ripping stuff. hah. :)
When I am done and back inside and making food or whatever, just cruising around, I have to put hella work into getting my legs 'back'.
Any fixes or tips? Is this just how being a runner in this part of the world (where you have an _actual_ winter. heh) feels like?
I do the requisite stretching before and after the run and I don't have any special needs or injuries.

Just figured I'd put it out there and check for any 'fixes' I might utilize. Thanks, yall.

Side note: I am from south Louisiana and am used to running either in extreme heat and humidity or in only very very mild winter chill.
I've been acclimating in the Bay Area for about a year and a half now, though. :) thnx again!

Okay folks... I'd always had a vague idea that this international running group existed in SF (something like 6,000 Hashes worldwide!), but I was under the assumption it was mostly a men's club and that it would be more about beer and hazing than running (and um, I'm a girl who doesn't drink a ton and considers herself a reasonably serious runner ;-) Then one dark winter evening in 2004, I was dressed for a run and trying to talk myself into actually going out the door, when I heard people shouting out "on on!" in my usually quiet neighborhood. I poked my head out the window. Masses of people were running up the street and around the corner. This was my cue!

I rushed out the door and joined the group... just running along... no one really noticed me until I struck up a conversation with a girl who looked about my age. Seems this was the Hash! The people who noticed me were friendly; the pack was running at a decent clip, stopping every so often to "look for trail." After a while I turned and headed home, website in mind "www.sfh3.com"

Since that night, I've run with the Hash almost weekly. In fact... um... I got suckered into being one of this year's two general managers (I'm the Grand Mattress, Hard 'n' Lengthy). So, yeah... after you've been running with the Hash a while, you will be given a Hash name (until then, you are "Just <insert your real name here>" Anyway... there are some silly things about the Hash... but it's all about having an open mind, leaving judgements behind, and having a good time.

You see, the Hash accepts everyone... it's an amazingly fun group of folks - mostly "professionals," late 20s to early 70s, drinkers, and yes, even one or two non-drinkers. Every Monday (rain or shine), we meet at a different SF location around 6:15PM and embark down a trail known only to the Hares (the Hashers who volunteered to plan and "set" that week's trail using chalk and flour). Our job is to find the trail... which will eventually lead us to BEER! SF Hashers range from folks out for their weekly jog/social hour to serious runners who tear up SF's steep hills on Monday nights and head out of town for marathons on the weekends. What I'm trying to say is, you can set your own pace.... Runs are usually 3-6 miles; include side streets, hills, and vistas you've never seen; and end with laughs around a keg.

To make a long story short, come check us out! Ask for Hard 'n' Lengthy (get your mind out of the gutter - because my *runs* are hard and lengthy!). For the location of our next run, call 415-5ON-HASH or go to the calendar at www.sfh3.com

On on!

But recently, my right hip tightens up after about 8 miles & I haven't been able to run more than 14 miles. I try to use the foam roller & ice it but it's hard to do this for long periods on my own. I've been to a good sports massage therapist (Kevin McCullough) who's worked on many track & field athletes, and just tried Samuel Ackerman who uses some Chinese Medicine techniques - accupressure, etc. But I think I also need Physical Therapy - does anyone have any recommendations for a good Physical Therapist in SF?

I've just signed up for Big Sur on April 30, and the guy I did a lot of training with last year will not be doing it this year. I've got some people to run with, but mostly non-marathoners, and more options are always better. Especially toward the end, it's pretty grim if you can't find somebody to run with and you're facing a 20 mile workout all by yourself.

Anyway, I live on the Peninsula in the Los Altos area and tend to run in Rancho San Antonio a lot, but am certainly willing to go as far as Crystal Springs or Los Gatos, especially to avoid a solo 20-miler.

I'm aiming for around a 4 hour finishing time. I ran it last year in 3:53, but things really clicked, and I'm not counting on doing that well again, although it would be great if I could.

I've got a decent base, but I'm just starting serious training, so I'm only doing 10 to 12 miles at the max right now. I'm moderately experienced, having run about 1 marathon per year for the last 10 years.

So if anybody's interested and has signed up for Big Sur or for another one that's in the same time frame, let me know, and maybe we can do some running together.

I've new to the bay area and hoping someone can help me out. I keep getting massive pain in both calfs when I go beyond 30 min on a regular basis. This has been pretty tough (I ran 40-80 miles/week for 15 years). It was so bad this weekend I was limping all day.
I take a few weeks off, it goes away, then starts again after any type of mileage over 4 miles.
Can anyone recommend a massage therapist in the north bay?
This methodology focuses on non traditional tools and methods of training endurance athletes. Chiro Medical Group's Dr Alex Callister and Mind and the Machine Master Trainer Joel Hornsby have combined their experience and used a variety of advanced tools to create highly effective methods of consistent power production to procuce exercises that are far more effective and efficient for the runner than the standard Gym workout. These techniques have already improved many runner's skill, speed, ability and eliminated pain.

To understand the motion of the human body one has understand the underlying structures and how they work. Knowing how the hip structure and the foot and ankle work optimally can improve a runners gait, speed, timing and recovery.

Methods of Training and Ideas:

•Focus on correcting in efficient motion by changing recruitment patterns through stability training and use of tools that correct alignment.
•Biomechanic similarity/Correct efficient motion/directional resistance to the prime movers (Agonist) and the opposing muscle (Antagonist). This can be emphasized by using objects that create optimal angles.
•Ability to consistently generate explosive power
•Russian Training (high repetition/time based) to increase threshold
•Ability to randomly generate explosive power
•Fartlek Methods of power and resistance training

Endurance/Power Concepts and Ideas::

•Specified Training for Agonist/Antagonist (Directional resistance for active muscles)
•Levers and understanding of Technique

•'Russian' Style: This is based on the concept of the long cycle and short cycle in Kettle Bell training. The goal is to have muscular endurance over 2 to 5 Minute cycles and to optimize technique to use timing and momentum and inertia to the athletes advantage.

•Power (Rate of Force Production): Power defined is the ability to generate maximal force at maximal speed. Our overall goal with this kind of training is repitition and the ability to create a power reserve by increasing precieved and actual threshold.

•Fartlek/Sustained/random output of power: Fartlek is a Swedish word that means "speed play". This form of training was developed in 1930 by Swedish national trainer Gösta Holmér ("Gösse"), and is still popular as effective method of training in middle and long-distance running.

Most activites require sustained output of power output consistantly at different points of time (when the player is 'near the ball' or has the ball or towards the end of a race, not necessarily when the don't have it or are not active in the play/event). At just about any point in most activites there will come a point when the participant has to 'turn it on' and increase their output. The concept behind a Fartlek approach to resistance training is to emphasize this ability.

I ran the most recent Bay to Breakers (naked to!), with my girlfriend and that was a lot of fun, I just don't seem to be motivated enough to do it by myself as it is very boring. Also, neing that I am a saxophone player, I'm pretty sure running would be beneficial to me in some regard. My girlfriend on the other hand, is really into running. Perhaps someone can give me some tips on how to start a running regiment without me killing myself.
