Okay folks... I'd always had a vague idea that this international running group existed in SF (something like 6,000 Hashes worldwide!), but I was under the assumption it was mostly a men's club and that it would be more about beer and hazing than running (and um, I'm a girl who doesn't drink a ton and considers herself a reasonably serious runner ;-) Then one dark winter evening in 2004, I was dressed for a run and trying to talk myself into actually going out the door, when I heard people shouting out "on on!" in my usually quiet neighborhood. I poked my head out the window. Masses of people were running up the street and around the corner. This was my cue!

I rushed out the door and joined the group... just running along... no one really noticed me until I struck up a conversation with a girl who looked about my age. Seems this was the Hash! The people who noticed me were friendly; the pack was running at a decent clip, stopping every so often to "look for trail." After a while I turned and headed home, website in mind "www.sfh3.com"

Since that night, I've run with the Hash almost weekly. In fact... um... I got suckered into being one of this year's two general managers (I'm the Grand Mattress, Hard 'n' Lengthy). So, yeah... after you've been running with the Hash a while, you will be given a Hash name (until then, you are "Just <insert your real name here>" Anyway... there are some silly things about the Hash... but it's all about having an open mind, leaving judgements behind, and having a good time.

You see, the Hash accepts everyone... it's an amazingly fun group of folks - mostly "professionals," late 20s to early 70s, drinkers, and yes, even one or two non-drinkers. Every Monday (rain or shine), we meet at a different SF location around 6:15PM and embark down a trail known only to the Hares (the Hashers who volunteered to plan and "set" that week's trail using chalk and flour). Our job is to find the trail... which will eventually lead us to BEER! SF Hashers range from folks out for their weekly jog/social hour to serious runners who tear up SF's steep hills on Monday nights and head out of town for marathons on the weekends. What I'm trying to say is, you can set your own pace.... Runs are usually 3-6 miles; include side streets, hills, and vistas you've never seen; and end with laughs around a keg.

To make a long story short, come check us out! Ask for Hard 'n' Lengthy (get your mind out of the gutter - because my *runs* are hard and lengthy!). For the location of our next run, call 415-5ON-HASH or go to the calendar at www.sfh3.com

On on!
