bay to breakers

topic posted Thu, March 15, 2007 - 8:29 PM by  Dread Pirate™
Hi there,

I'm thinking hard about doing the Bay to Breakers - and I'm looking for some tips from anybody who has done it -

Like, what are the best transport options to the start line?
What hotels near the start do you recommend (host hotel is booked)?
I saw the course profile - that hill looks kinda serious!
Any insider tips here?

Thanks in advancE

If you are serious about racing, try and qualify for a seeded position.
If that's not possible, arrive early and claim a space at the front of the pack. Otherwise, you'll be stuck behind a field about 1/2 a mile deep. On the plus side, you'll get to experience the pre-race tortilla toss!

If you are staying too far away to walk to the starting line, take muni. Parking is ridiculously hard to find and the lots are super expensive.

I suggest finding a hotel somewhere other than near the start. Check out places located near attractions or neighborhoods that you would like to visit. It's very easy to find a bus headed downtown...and the number and frequency of those buses are always increased during big races like B2B.

Don't worry about the hill. It's not as bad as some make it out to be. Thousands of half-drunk, costume clad non-runners get over that hill every year...so will you. Don't sweat it. Incorporating one or two hill strider sessions into your weekly running schedule will make this hill feel like a piece of cake.

Don't stress about it... it doesn't matter what level you're at.
Just come on out and do it.
    You'll have a blast.

Yup -- you will have a blast.

BUT, unless you're a seeded runner, count on a "personal worst" time. Because of the crowding, unless you're in the very front, it is not a race for speed. In fact, on the TV coverage they often interview the last folks across the starting line and the winners have already finished by then ...

I looked at the times for the Seeded racers - in my wildest dreams I'm not that fast (yet) so I guess I'll be running with the costumed masses.

Uh, anybody know the reason for the tortilla toss thing? I know nothing about this...

I've done bay to breakers several years. unless you are a seeded runner, or have some hookup that lets you start near the seeded runners forget about trying to run this "race".

There are about 50,000 people in various stages of undress, costume or drunkedness. Although many people are moving at a jogging pace if you try to run you will have to weave through tens of thousands of people who are not nearly as serious as you may be.

It's a lot of fun, probably the biggest moving party I've ever seen.. but it is a much more of a party than a race. I'd advise you to make a costume, grab a beer and just jog this race with the crowd.

            hi,

i wanted to to the bay to breakers this time as well, and was just about to find out
            how i best train for a 12 k race.
now i read this post and realize that i don't really have to train for it, because it's
not really a race, and i can't really run anyway because there are so many
people in the way, so i should just slowly run or walk with them.

you said that there are lots of naked and drunk people ( i remember reading about
that last year, and seeing pics of naked folks), but the rules on the baytobreakers website
            claim the following:

*****Only REGISTERED participants will be ADMITTED to the Start and Finish areas. For everyone's safety and enjoyment NO ALCOHOL or NUDITY is allowed and there will be ALCOHOL CHECKPOINTS along the course. Additionally, no pets, roller blades, skateboards, bicycles, or plastic bags for warm-ups are allowed on course. Wheeled objects and over-sized costumes must line up at the back.

SO: no nudes, no drunks this year? is that new? or are the rules there to disobey them...?

            thanks

they have always had a rule against nudity and it is ignored.
they have also always had a rule against drinking, which has also been ignored... I mean ignored to the point where people are making floats with fully stocked bars and cold taps and pushing them along the course.

last year they added the checkpoints and that seemed to discourage a much of the drinking, but the word after the race was that they were only checking for drunk people, not actually stopping anyone from drinking. I can't predict if there will be more or less drinking this year, but I'm sure there will be some.

I had a blast at bay to breakers, I walked it but was unable to actually complete the foot race. I had to bow out at mile 4 due to just being to damn drunk to feel like moving anymore.

                  I did a PR!

OK, it's the first 12K race I've ever done...still - I managed 1:17 with a potty break prior to Hayes st. Hill.

That was the Hill? What was I worried about!

Very happy - was able to mostly run it at a very decent pace. yay!

so I've lived in the city for four years, but this is the first that I don't have to work for bay to breakers. So, I plan on being on of the drunk costumed people trailing in the back, do I need to register officially with the race? Or is everyone else in the back illegals? How does that bit work.
